Default Black Screen/ Backlight Broken?

I noticed yesterday and today my monitor is constantly going to a black screen and i kinda see a message in the darkness/blackness-it's kinda burned out? But it is not there when i turn my monitor back on-everything is normal) I'll be typing this right now-and my monitor turns off. Why is this? Can anyone help me-thanks.

Although the monitor light is still on green when it does this...but the screen goes black like it does when it is turned off....

The only way I can fix this is turning the monitor on and off-but it keeps happening

Edit: The message I see isn't a message-it is this site so it seems my back light isn't working?

Mine did that for a while; in my experience it had to do with the screen resolution. I had to keep my resolution at one not native to my monitor to keep it from shutting off. It eventually went away on its own, so I'm assuming it had to do with my video card drivers (Nvidia + quality Vista Drivers = nonexistent). So, try changing the resolution in display settings and see if it helps.

How do I change the resolution? Doesn't that just change the monitor resolution to like 1024X768, for example?

Yes, that's what it does. If it works, great. If not - your backlight is on its way out. New monitor time (or RMA this one if it's within warranty period.)

I had the same problem not too long ago. Assuming it's not a simple resolution problem, either the LCD backlight or the inverter is broken. Send it back to the manufacturer to get it fixed or buy a new monitor.

I don't think I can send it to the manufacturer as I got this monitor with my computer 4 years old and I don't think they make this monitor anymore, not to mention I don't think the warranty lasted 4 years.

So this can't be fixed I have to get a new monitor?

*Sigh* This is not going to go well I just had to get my computer fixed after the hard drive failed 2 months ago....

Kinda right before it goes black

EDIT: I lowered the back light from 100-0 and it stopped. So I guess this means that the back light is having issues.... =/

I guess I just have to go to Best Buy where I bought my computer and have the Geek Squad fix this like they did when my hard drive failed...

Lol - sorry, I thought you'd answered your own question in your last post ^^

I'm not in the USA, but I'm not hearing good things about Geek Squad (sounds like us Brits being stupid enough to let the PC World boxshifters loose on our systems.)

Any reputable PC spares/suppliers, take the monitor in and say "is this repairable or not, and is it commercially viable to do so"

If you're not too strapped for cash, just get a new one.

Buy a new monitor. Geek Squad will take your first born child and still won't fix anything.

Alright thanks for the responses.

Do you still think it is ok to use? I mean if it is the monitor i should be alright using my computer right? A temporary fix I found is to be on the "low" brightness settings instead of "user or high"

Also what would be a good monitor to get? I have a SONY monitor

*note: i can't purchase one online it has to be from a U.S store*

In my experence, you can't go wrong with Samsung LCDs. Never had or even heard of (from a reliable source) a dead or stuck pixel.

So I looked at some prices for monitors online and they don't seem to be very cheap... (at least the good ones)

Really? That is where we took our computer to get the hard drive fixed when it broke. (We originally bought the PC from Best Buy as well-so made sense to use Geek Squad)

What did you hear about Geek Squad?

geek squad is notorious for overcharging customers for simple work, as well as making poor choices regarding upgrades and such.

basically, they royally rip people off.

the main thing to take note of is that these big box stores do not make much money on their products. rather, they are making a killing off of computer illiterates with their "extended warranties", "service plans", and other nonsense.

Thanks for that, moriz - you just confirmed my suspicions.

Geek Squad are exactly like PC World's "service" in Britain.

Seifus, good monitors are expensive, but if you think about it, they are one of the most important parts of a PC setup. It's what you will be looking at. The best graphics card in the world will still look like crap on a cheap monitor.
